MYCOPLASMA INFECTIONS

  • Mycoplasma are smallest free-living organisms. They cause upper and lower respiratory tract disease. “!”he organism is M. pneumoniae.

Age affected is

  • 5-20 years.

Signs and Symptoms

  • There is headache,
  • cough,
  • tracheobronchitis,
  • pneu­monia.
  • There may be myalgias.
  • Auscultation of lungs may be normal.
  • X-ray shows pneumonia.

Extra-pulmonary manifestations

  • may be Steven­Johnson syndrome,
  • myocarditis and pericarditis.

Mycoplasma and Chalmydial Infections Treatment

  • May not be required as it is self-limited.
  • Doxycycline,
  • Clarithromycin,
  • Azithromycin,
  • Levofloxacin are all effective for community ac­quired pneumonias.
  • For hospitalized patients,
  • IV Ceftriaxone or
  • Levofloxacin may be used.

CHLAMYDIAL INFECTIONS

  • C. pneumoniae is a common cause of upper respi­ratory tract infection in children and young adults.
  • It may also have a role in atherosclerotic heart dis­ease, asthma, sarcoidosis.
  • It can also cause endocarditis, peritonitis, pleuritis and Reiter’s syndrome i.e. Conjunctivitis, Urethritis, Arthritis, and Mucocutaneous lesions.
  • C. trachomatis causes trachoma, and sexually trans­mitted diseases which may also affect newborn in­fants.
  • C. psittaci causes an infectious disease of birds and mammals called ornithosis. There is fever, headache, cough, pneumonia, myalgia, epistaxis, GI symptoms.
  • C. i>s for Chlamydia.

CHLAMYDIAL INFECTIONS Treatment

  • Chlamydia responds to tetracycline and eryth­romycin 2 gm per day for 2 weeks.
