Indications & Dose: IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA IV Adult As total dose inf: Initially 25mg of iron over 15min (in 500mL 0.9% Nacl), if no adverse effects occur then inf rate may be increased progressively to 45-60 drops/min. The dose should be given only | IM Adult 100mg iron (2mL) Child <5 kg: 25mg iron (0.5mL), 5-10 kg: 50mg iron (1mL), >10 kg: 100mg iron (2mL)A test dose should be given on the 1st day of therapy, patient should be observed for 1h for hypersensitivity reaction, then the remaining dose (dose minus test dose) |
Contra: Hypersensitivity, any anemia not associated with iron deficiency, severe liver damage
Precautions: Allergies, asthma, cancer-associated anemia, CVD, hepatic/renal impairment, RA ADR: Serious: Seizures, hemosiderosis, anaphylaxis, syncope, chest pain, tachycardia, hypotension, hemolysis, lymphadenopathy, hypersensitivity reactions, Others: joint pain, myalgia, dyspnea, abnormal/metallic taste, tooth discoloration, fever, nausea, vomiting, hemochromatosis, Dizziness, headache Diet: Monitor: Hb, hematocrit, reticulocyte count, serum ferritin, serum Fe, monitor for anaphylaxis/hypersensitivity reaction (during test dose & therapeutic dose) |
