Drug Dose ::

 Route/Dosage

ADULTS: PO 250 mg tid-qid. PR 200 mg tid-qid. IM 200 mg tid-qid. CHILDREN 14–41 KG: PO 100–200 mg tid-qid. PR 100–200 mg tid-qid. CHILDREN < 14 KG: PR 100 mg tid-qid.

Contraindication ::

 Contraindications Hypersensitivity to benzocaine or other local anesthetics. Suppositories contraindicated in neonates or premature infants; parenteral use contraindicated in children.

 Precautions

Pregnancy: Safety not established. Lactation: Undetermined. Hypersensitivity: Has been reported; discontinue use of drug at first signs of sensitivity.

 Adverse Reactions

CV: Hypotension (after injection). CNS: Mood depression; disorientation; headache; drowsiness; opisthotonos; izziness; seizures; coma; Parkinson-like symptoms. EENT: Blurred vision. GI: Diarrhea. HEMA: Blood dyscrasias. HEPA: Jaundice. OTHER: Local pain, burning, stinging, redness and swelling (after injection); ypersensitivity reactions; muscle cramps.

• Obtain patient history, including drug history and any known allergies.
• Assess bowel sounds and severity of nausea and vomiting.
• Implement safety precautions, particularly during initial therapy until individual response is determined.
• Implement general comfort measures.
• Monitor response to therapy.
• Monitor I&O.
• Monitor vital signs, particularly BP.
• Monitor for potential side effects, particularly drowsiness and hypotension.

Drug Storage/Management ::

 Administration/Storage

• Do not use oral route with vomiting.
• If necessary, open capsule and mix with food or liquids for administration.
• Use Z-track technique for IM administration.
• Avoid exposure to light; store at room temperature.
• Avoid freezing injectable.

Drug Notes ::

 Patient/Family Education

• Instruct patient that when used for motion sickness, medication should be taken 30 min before exposure to motion.
• Advise patient to report these symptoms to physician: dizziness, yellowing of skin or eyes, muscle cramps or abnormal movements.
• Instruct patient to avoid intake of alcoholic beverages or other CNS depressants.
• Advise patient that drug may cause drowsiness or dizziness and to use caution while driving or performing tasks requiring mental alertness.
