Indications & Dose: COMPLEX PARTIAL SEIZURES Chronic PO/IV Adult Initially 10-15mg/kg/day, increase by 5-10mg/kg/day at weekly intervals until therapeutic levels are achieved, max 60mg/kg/day Child Initially 10-15mg/kg/day, increase by 5-10mg/kg/day at weekly intervals until therapeutic levels are achieved, max 60mg/kg/dayIV: Administer as 60mins infusion (20mg/min) | MANIA Acute PO Adult Initially 750mg/day in divided doses, max 60mg/kg/day | MIGRAINE Prophylactic therapy PO Adult 250mg BID, adjust dose based on patient response, max 1g/day Child = 16yrs: 250mg BID, adjust dose based on patient response, max 1g/day | SIMPLE & COMPLEX ABSENCE SEIZURES Chronic PO Adult Initially 15mg/kg/day, increase by 5-10mg/kg/day at weekly intervals until therapeutic levels are achieved, max 60mg/kg/day Child Initially 15mg/kg/day, increase by 5-10mg/kg/day at weekly intervals until therapeutic levels are achieved, max 60mg/kg/day |
Contra: Hypersensitivity, hepatic impairment, pancreatitis, porphyria
Precautions: Sudden withdrawal, before major surgery/anticoagulant therapy, renal impairment, SLE ADR: Serious: increase in bleeding time, extrapyramidal symptoms, dementia, encephalopathy, hyponatremia, SJS, TEN, thrombocytopenia, hepatic dysfunction, Others: Pancreatitis, coma, nausea, diarrhea, gastric irritation, weight gain, lethargy, drowsiness, confusion, leucopenia, hirsutism, hallucinations DDI: Serious Colestyramine decreases drug level, Chlorpromazine/Aspirin/Erythromycin/Felbamate/Isoniazid increases drug levels, Fluoxetine increases/decreases drug level Diet: With food Monitor: LTF, CBC with platelets, PT/PTT, serum drug level |
