Indications for Drugs ::
Chronic inflammatory diseases of the liver & hepatic cirrhosis.
Drug Dose ::
Oral Hepatic diseases Adult: Initially and In Serious Cases: 70-mg capsule: 2 caps 3 times daily. 140-mg capsule: 1 cap 3 times daily. Should be taken with food. Take after meals.
Contraindication ::
Hypersensitivity, pregnancy, lactation.

Drug Side Effects ::
Occasional laxative effects. Abdominal bloating, diarrhoea, flatulence, loss of appetite, anorexia, nausea, stomach upset.

Drug Mode of Action ::
Silymarin is an active principle from the fruit of Silybum marianum, which contains a mixture of flavonolignans. It reduces the turnover of membrane phospholipids and stabilises the cell membranes of hepatocytes. It has potent antioxidant action and prevents lipid peroxidation.
Drug Interactions ::
Reduced lipid peroxidation w/ butyrophenones or phenothiazine. Antagonistic effect w/ yohimbine & phentolamine.
