Indications & Dose: DISSOLUTION OF CHOLESTEROL-RICH GALLSTONES PO Adult 6-12mg/kg/day as single dose at HS or in 2-3 divided doses for 3-4months after radiological disappearance of stones, max 15mg/kg/day. Dose may divide unequally, large dose gives before bedtime to counteract increase in biliary cholesterol saturation | PREVENTION OF GALLSTONES PO Adult 300mg BID in patients undergoing rapid weight loss | PRIMARY BILIARY CIRRHOSIS PO Adult 10-15mg/kg/day in 2-4 divided doses |
| Contra: intestinal & hepatic disorders, radio-opaque stones, non-functioning gall bladder, in chronic liver disease, patients with radiolucent gallstones
ADR: Serious: calcification of cholesterol stones, increased liver enzyme values, Others: nausea, vomiting, GI disturbances, diarrhea, pruritus DDI: Serious Antacids decrease drug absorption, Oestrogens/Colestyramine reduces drug efficacy, Digoxin reduces exposure to digoxin |
