Indications & Dose: ACUTE AGITATION IN SCHIZOPHRENIA IM Adult 10mg q2h or 20mg q4h, max 40mg/day; switch to oral therapy at the earliest Child Initiate with low dose, titrate slowly | BIPOLAR DISORDER PO Adult 40-80mg BID adjunct to lithium/valproate | MANIA PO Adult Initially 40mg BID, 60-80mg BID can be given on day 2, usual range 40-80mg BID | SCHIZOPHRENIA PO Adult Initially 20mg BID, increase the dose no more frequently than q2days if needed MD 20-80mg BID |
| Contra: Hypersensitivity, history of/current prolonged QT interval, congenital long QT syndrome, recent MI, uncompensated HF, concurrent use of other QTc-prolonging agents
Precautions: Alzheimer’s disease, hepatic impairment, parkinson’s disease, risk of seizures, elderly ADR: Serious: postural hypotension, chest pain, HTN, tachycardia, bradycardia, oculogyric crisis, EPS, neuropathy, tremor, Others: respiratory tract infect, diaphoresis, somnolence, headache, dizziness, nausea, vertigo, fever, rash, dysmenorrhea, weight gain, constipation, dyspepsia, weight gain, diarrhea, vomiting, xerostomia, myalgia, akathisia, insomnia, agitation, amnesia, ataxia, delirium DDI: Serious Quetiapine leads to mild motor deterioration, Ketoconazole moderately increases drug levels Diet: With food Monitor: BP, HR, temperature, serum K+ & Mg; lipid profile, blood glucose, Hgb A1c, weight, BMI, waist circumference, mental status, AIMS, EPS, ECG |
