Contra: Hypersensitivity, porphyria

Precautions: False positive Coombs’ test, penicillin-sensitive patients, history of allergy, renal impairment, false-positive reactions for glucose using copper-reduction reactions, false Jaffé method of measuring creatinine levels

ADR: Serious: Hypersensitivity reactions, bleeding complications, platelet dysfunction, blood disorders, anaphylaxis, hypoprothrombinemia, nephrotoxicity, acute interstitial nephritis, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice, transient increases in liver enzyme values, convulsions, CNS toxicity, overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, pseudomembranous colitis, thrombophlebitis, SJS, TEN, Others: mild-to-moderate hearing loss, skin rashes, urticaria, eosinophilia, fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, local reactions, pain at inj site

DDI: Serious Coumarins increased risk of hemorrhage, Tobramycin/Gentamicin increases risk of nephrotoxicity, Ranitidine/Famotidine reduces drug bioavailability

Diet: With food

Monitor: Signs & symptoms of anaphylaxis during first dose, with prolonged therapy, renal function test, LFTs, hematologic function periodically & PT
