Indications & Dose: CONTRACEPTION PO Adult 1 tablet (30µg) OD initiated on day 1 of menstrual cycle | EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION PO Adult 1 tablet (0.75mg) within 3 days of unprotected sexual intercourse, a second 0.75 mg tablet should be taken 12h after the first dose or 1 tablet (1.5mg) within 3 days of unprotected sexual intercourse, may be used at any time during menstrual cycle | HEAVY MENSTRUAL BLEEDING VAG Adult IUD (releases 20µg of levonorgestrel/day) is inserted within 7 days of onset of menstruation or immediately after 1st trimester abortion. May be replaced with a new unit at anytime during menstrual cycle, do not leave for >5 yr | LONG-TERM INTRAUTERINE CONTRACEPTION (5 YEARS) VAG Adult Intrauterine device containing a total of 52mg of levonorgestrel (releases 20µg of levonorgestrel/day over 5 yr) is inserted into uterine cavity |
| Contra: Severe arterial disease, history of breast cancer, thromboembolic disorders, porphyria, emergency contraception, porphyria
Precautions: Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, CVD, past ectopic pregnancy, active liver disease, recurrent cholestatic jaundice, migraine, DM, severe malabsorption syndromes, active trophoblastic disease, renal impairment ADR: Serious: Menstrual irregularities, breast cancer, ectopic pregnancy, uterine/vaginal bleeding alterations, HTN, angioedema, sepsis, Others: hirsutism, alopecia, leukorrhea, eczema, breast discomfort, depression, skin disorders, disturbances of appetite, weight increase, change in libido, Nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness DDI: Serious Telithromycin/Fluconazole increases drug levels, Carbamazepine leads to breakthrough bleeding & spotting Monitor: IUD: Physical examination, Pap smear, BP, Se glucose (DM), TC, signs of infect following IUD insertion; Oral tab: Pregnancy, spontaneous abortion/ectopic |
