Indications & Dose: MEASLES PO Adult Women of reproductive age with night blindness/Bilot’s spots: <10, 000U/day or <25, 000U/wk Child <6 months: 50, 000U OD, 6-12 months: 100, 000U, >1 yr: 20, 000U. Continue therapy 2 days, repeat with single dose in 2 wk | VITAMIN A DEFICIENCY PO Adult Pregnant women: 10, 000U/day or 25, 000U/wk Child <6 months: 50, 000U OD, 6-12 months: 100, 000U, >1 yr: 20, 000U as single dose. Repeat q4-6month. Do not re administer within 30 days of previous dose | IM Adult 100, 000U OD 3 days then 50, 000U OD 2wk followed by oral therapy (10, 000-20, 000U OD 2 months) Child Infants: 7500-15, 000U OD 10 days followed by oral therapy (dose not established in low birth weight infants), 1-8 yr: 17, 500-35, 000U OD 10 days followed by oral therapy (5, 000-10, 000U OD 2 months), >8 yr: Same as adult dose | XEROPHTHALMIA PO Adult Women of reproductive age with night blindness/Bilot’s spots: <10, 000U/day or <25, 000U/wk. May be given up to 200, 000U in severe conditions (irrespective of pregnancy) Child <6 months: 50, 000U OD, 6-12 months: 100, 000U, >1 yr: 20, 000U. Continue therapy 2 days, repeat with single dose in 2 wk |
| Contra: Hypersensitivity, hypervitaminosis
Precautions: Renal impairment ADR: Serious: hypercalcemia, hypervitaminosis A, anaphylactic shock, increased ICP, death, Others: fever, irritability, vision changes, vertigo, anorexia DDI: Serious Isotretinoin/Acitretin/Tretinoin causes drug over dosage, Alcohol impairs drug metabolism & leads to toxicity, Neomycin reduces drug absorption |
