Indications for Drugs ::
Indications Local treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis (moniliasis).
Drug Dose ::
Route/Dosage
NONPREGNANT FEMALES: Intravaginal: 1 applicator (» 5 g) at bedtime for 3 days; may continue up to 6 days if needed. PREGNANT FEMALES: Intravaginal: Use only during second or third trimester, 1 applicator (» 5 g) at bedtime for 6 days.
Contraindication ::
Contraindications Hypersensitivity to imidazoles.
Drug Precautions ::
Precautions
Pregnancy: Category C. Lactation: Undetermined. Children: Safety and efficacy not established. Intractable candidiasis: May be symptom of unrecognized diabetes or reinfection; patient should be evaluated carefully. Irritation or sensitization: If this occurs, use is discontinued.

Drug Assesment ::
Assessment/Interventions
- Obtain patient history, including drug history and any known allergies.
- Observe for vulvar or vaginal burning or urinary frequency. Notify physician of any signs of tissue changes at site of application.
- If patient has diabetes, monitor blood sugar and provide necessary interventions to control condition.
Drug Storage/Management ::
Administration/Storage
- Open applicator immediately before administration to prevent contamination.
- Use care not to contaminate applicator during use.
- With patient in supine position, (at bedtime or while in bed) insert medication high in vagina.
- Complete full course of therapy even during menstrual period.
- Store at room temperature. Avoid heat above 40°C (104°F). Do not freeze.

Patient/Family Education
- Teach patient correct application technique.
- Instruct patient to use sanitary napkin to prevent staining clothing.
- Caution patient to refrain from sexual intercourse or advise partner to use condom to prevent reinfection.
- Explain importance of informing sexual partner of possible infection and of seeking appropriate medical treatment.
- Caution patient against using tampons during treatment.
- Tell patient to notify physician if any of the following symptoms occur after initiation of therapy: Headache; body aches; local irritation, burning or rash; vaginal swelling or discharge; sensitivity to light.
