Drugs Class ::

 Action Unknown. May modify the immune processes that are thought to be responsible for multiple sclerosis (MS).

Indications for Drugs ::

 Indications To reduce the frequency of relapses in patients with relapsing-remitting MS.

Drug Dose ::

 Route/Dosage

ADULTS: SC 20 mg q day.

Contraindication ::

 Contraindications Hypersensitivity to glatiramer acetate or mannitol.

Drug Precautions ::

 Precautions

Pregnancy: Category B. Lactation: Undetermined. Children: Safety and efficacy in children < 18 not established. Immunity: Could possibly interfere with useful immune function (eg, decreased defense against infection or tumor surveillance). Immediate post-injection reaction: Approximately 10% of patients experience a constellation of symptoms immediately after injection. Symptoms may include: Flushing; chest pain; palpitations; anxiety; dyspnea; constriction of throat; urticaria. These symptoms are usually transient and self-limited and generally occur several months after starting therapy.

CV: Vasodilation; chest pain; palpitations; tachycardia; syncope; hypertension. CNS: Anxiety; depression; migraine headache; asthenia; hypertonia; tremor; dizziness; nervousness; agitation; confusion; abnormal dreams; emotional liability; stupor; foot drop. DERM: Rash; pruritis; sweating; flushing; urticaria; nodules. GI: Nausea; diarrhea; vomiting; anorexia; oral moniliasis. GU: Urinary urgency; vaginal moniliasis; dysmenorrhea. HEMA: Ecchymosis; lymphadenopathy. META: Peripheral edema; edema of face; weight gain. EENT: Nystagmus; ear pain; rhinitis; laryngismus. RESP: Dyspnea; bronchitis; hyperventilation. OTHER: Pain; fever; chills; “flu-like” syndrome; arthralgia; injections site reaction (pain, erythema, inflammation, pruritis, induration, welt, hemorrhage, urticaria, atrophy, abscess, mass); infection; neck pain.

Drug Assesment ::

 Assessment/Interventions

  • Obtain patient history.
  • Assess patient for GI, CNS, CV, RESP, and DERM reactions. If present, notify health care provider.
  • Monitor results of laboratory tests.

Drug Storage/Management ::

 Administration/Storage

  • For SC use only. Do not administer IV.
  • Reconstitute with supplied diluent (Sterile Water for Injection). Gently swirl vial and let stand at room temperature. Do not shake.
  • Do not use if solution contains particulate matter.
  • Use immediately after reconstitution because there is no preservative. Discard any unused solution.
  • Administer SC with 27–gauge needle into arm, abdomen, hip, or thigh.
  • Rotate injection sites, not repeating same site more than once weekly.
  • Store unreconstituted glatiramer acetate in freezer. Diluent may be stored at room temperature.

 Patient/Family Education

  • Ensure that patient or responsible family member has been instructed in the proper storage, preparation, and injection technique.
  • Provide patient information booklet and discuss.
  • Advise patient to not change the dose, dosing schedule, or discontinue the medication without consulting with his/her health care provider.
  • Advise female patient to notify her health care provider if she becomes pregnant or intends to become pregnant or is breastfeeding while taking this drug.
  • Provide puncture-resistant container for disposal of used syringes and needles. Instruct patient in proper disposal of container when full.
  • Instruct patient to report symptoms that may represent side effects: Chest pain; pounding in chest; “flu-like” symptoms; pain or other injection-site reactions; headache; fever; breathing difficulty; anxiety; tremors; nervousness; rash; itching; hives; blotchy swelling.
