Indications & Dose: HYPERTENSION PO Adult Initially 250mg 2-3 times/day, increase q2days as needed max 3g/day, usual dose range 250-1000mg/day in 2 divided doses Child Initially 10mg/kg/day in 2-4 divided doses, increase q2days as needed max 65mg/kg/day (do not exceed 3g/day) | IV Adult 250-500mg q6-8h, max 1g q6h Child 5-10mg/kg/dose q6-8h up to total dose of 65mg/kg/day or 3g/day |
Contra: Hypersensitivity, active hepatic disease, liver disorders with the use of methyldopa, on MAOI, bisulfite allergy, depression, pheochromocytoma
Precautions: HF, edema, hemolytic anemia, hypotension, severe bilateral cerebrovascular disease, dialysis patients, elderly, hepatic/renal impairment, parkinsonism ADR: Serious: involuntary choreoathetotic movements, bradycardia, edema, orthostatic hypotension, Myocarditis, pancreatitis, hemolytic anemia, hepatitis, parkinsonism, Others: Bell’s palsy, headache, asthenia, weakness, dizziness, sedation, decreased mental acuity, depression, paresthesia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal distention, colitis, dry mouth, sialadenitis, sore/black tongue, breast enlargement, gynecomastia, erectile dysfunction, eosinophilia, fever DDI: Serious Phenothiazines additive hypotensive effect, Haloperidol causes marked CNS adverse effects, MAOIs enhances depressive effect of drug, Phenylpropanolamine increases BP, Ferrous Sulphate/Ferrous Gluconate reduces antihypertensive effects of drug, Lithium toxicity occurs Diet: |
