Description of Cerebral malaria

Cerebral malaria is the most significant complication of falciparum malaria. The underlying pathophysiology is blockade of cerebral microcirculation by the parasitized red blood cells. This obstruction in the blood flow  leads to reduced oxygen supply to brain and increased lactate production. The affected person presents with headache, fever and eventually delirium and coma.
