Description of Familial Mediterranean fever (Hereditary inflammatory disorder)
Familial Mediterranean fever, or hereditary inflammatory disorder, is an inherited condition. Individuals suffering from this condition have repeated episodes of painful inflammation in their abdomen, chest or joints that may last 12 to 72 hours. They do not have any symptoms between attacks. The condition is caused by mutations in the MEFV (Mediterranean fever) gene. The mutation leads to reduced activity of a protein that regulates inflammation which results in incorrect or prolonged inflammatory response.
