Drugs Class ::
Action Inhibits thrombin by reversibly binding to the catalytic site and the anion-binding exosite of circulating and clot-bound thrombin. Inhibits clot-bound and free, circulating thrombin, reducing the amount of active thrombin present for clot formation and extension.
Indications for Drugs ::
Indications Anticoagulant in combination with aspirin in patients with unstable angina undergoing percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA).
Drug Dose ::
Route/Dosage
ADULTS: IV Bolus of 1 mg/kg followed by a 4-hr IV infusion at a rate of 2.5 mg/kg/hr. After the 4-hr infusion, an additional IV infusion of 0.2 mg/kg/hr for £ 20 hr may be given if needed. Bivalirudin is intended for concurrent use with aspirin (300 to 325 mg/day). Initiate treatment prior to PTCA.
Contraindication ::

Adverse Reactions
CV: Hypotension; hypertension; bradycardia. CNS: Headache; insomnia; anxiety; nervousness. GI: Nausea; vomiting; abdominal pain; dyspepsia. GU: Urinary retention. HEMA: Bleeding. OTHER: Back pain; pain; injection site pain; pelvic pain; fever.
