Description of Drug induced abnormal movements

Drug-induced movement disorders, commonly referred to as extrapyramidal symptoms, are side effects of certain medications that result in involuntary movements. They are brought forth by medications that alter central nervous system. They are associated with abnormal postures, rigidity, muscle spasms, tremor, slow movements, etc. Drug-induced movement disorders include dystonia, dyskinesia, akathisia, tardive dyskinesia, chorea, Parkinsonism, etc. The onset can be acute (occurs within hours to days after drug exposure), subacute (occurs weeks after drug exposure) and tardive (occurs months to years after drug exposure).
