I. Pharmacology. Apomorphineis an alkaloid salt derived from morphine that is a dopaminergicagonist with minimal analgesic properties but marked emetic efficacy.Vomiting is produced by direct stimulation of the medullarychemoreceptor trigger zone. After subcutaneous administration, emesisoccurs within an average of 5 minutes; oral administration is notrecommended because of erratic absorption. In 2004, the FDA approvedapomorphine for the treatment of hypomobility episodes associated withParkinson’s disease.
Drug Indications ::
Indications. Apomorphinepreviously was used for induction of emesis in the acute management oforal poisoning, but it has been abandoned because of its potential forrespiratory depression. The drug is not discussed further in this book,but it remains popular in veterinary practice.
